SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 12

Requesting the division of highways to use the word "please"
on instructional and informational road signs on West
Virginia's roadway systems.
Whereas, From time to time, the Legislature enacts
legislation affecting the motorists of West Virginia; and
Whereas, These enactments require certain actions on
behalf of motorists, such as the use of seat belts and the use
of headlights during inclement weather; and
Whereas, The division of highways is charged with the
responsibility of informing the motorists of our state of
these enactments through the use of instructional and
informational road signs; and
Whereas, Through no fault of the division of highways,
these signs are normally printed with indifferent and insensitive language; and
Whereas, The use of the word "please" would provide an
amiable and considerate way of asking our citizens and others
who utilize our roadway systems to comply with the information
or instructions the signs are conveying, rather than to use
commanding or demanding dialect; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby requests the divisions of highways
to utilize the word "please" on instructional and
informational road signs throughout the state of West Virginia
in an attempt to kindly and politely request that our citizens
and others who use our roadway systems comply with the
instructions and information conveyed by our signs; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to
forward a copy of this resolution to the governor of the state
of West Virginia, the secretary of the department of
transportation and the commissioner of the division of
highways.
